This week we’re going to talk about the holy grail of online video … well, the other one besides getting traffic.

You’re probably up to your ears in metrics that support the fact that online video “engages users.” But what does this really mean? And how can you “engage users” so that they opt in, come back to visit, make a purchase or do whatever it is that you are trying to get them to do – while competing with ka-zillions of sites all over the Internet … sites that offer nearly the same product, but give it away for free?

  • Offer a high-quality product. No brainer, right? But people are always talking about getting more traffic and more eyes on their site but you rarely read a blog post that talks about making your product or service truly kick-ass. If what you’re offering isn’t at least as good as the free stuff you can get on the Internet, you’re always going to be fighting an uphill battle.

  • Message your value proposition to make it cost neutral. Make sure your viewers leave your website knowing that if they opt to stick with you, they are going to get a return on their investment – whether it is a time investment listening to your podcast, watching your videos, reading your blog or a monetary investment purchasing your service or product.

  • Message plus-ups. Offer a free product or service like a webinar, quality ebook, course or consultation, and then up-sell your software, membership site or whatever it is you are actually selling.

  • Don’t compete with free. Mercedes doesn’t compete with Kia. Target the high end of the market.
